Meet the Maker - Prompt 8 - Work in Progress

Well, along with the fruit soaps I have been working on a few things in the background.

The main issue here is time. When creating new cosmetics there's a LOT of testing to do:

  1. Formulate - researching ingredients and creating a recipe, make up a small batch, see how it feels, works, lasts then tweak the recipe and repeat.
  2. Test - once happy with the recipe then it needs testing, a lot of testing is done at home first - how long does it last, have I got the balance right to avoid bacteria growing! Once I'm I can now send the recipe to be assessed... if it's a product containing water it also has to be sent for stability testing.
  3. Wait - stability testing takes a few months. A batch of your product is sent and put under various stresses - how does it react in light, heat etc. If something isn't right then it's back to the drawing board.
  4. Once all of this comes back OK and the assessment is written up then the product can be sold (following all packaging and labelling guidelines as per the write ups).

It's quite a costly process too.

Candles and home fragrance products don't necessarily need sending off for testing - providing you do your own in house testing. There's no 'one size fits all' when it comes to what percentage of fragrance will work or, in candles, what wick, wax and fragrance combination will work. There's testing to be done to ensure your combination doesn't create a humongous and dangerous flame, isn't full of petals and crystals that could set on fire, it's burning so hot that the glass may explode... Once the testing is complete then there's some serious labelling guidelines to follow too.

But, despite all of that, I am working on a few things and I'm hoping we will start to see them being introduced sometime late this year (hopefully earlier for candles). I'm so excited to start expanding what I offer but it's just a long and slow process to ensure that I'm putting out safe (and legal) products.

So what am I actually working on?

Cosmetics: Bath salts & skin care.

Home Fragrance: Candles, room sprays, reed diffusers.

What are you excited to see? Are you looking for anything in particular?
