Meet the Maker - Prompt 1 - Brand Introduction

Hello! I'm Kathryn and I make Cold Process Soap.

Handmade by Kathryn was created from a desire to be able to purchase products that aren’t mass-produced, come with minimal packaging & aren’t full of unnecessary ingredients.

I've always dreamt of making my own skin care products and soap was a good place to start from an eco friendly point of view. I originally wanted to offer naked, unwrapped soap but quickly realised that some sort of protection around the soap itself would also enable me to try out various packaging and shipping options to keep the whole thing eco friendly.

I really dislike all the greenwashing that big companies do or using packaging that sounds like it's good for the planet but actually it's potentially worse than the stuff that's been labelled as 'bad'.

I regularly research ingredients, processes and packaging to ensure that I'm not falling into greenwashing myself and I check my packaging can be home composted (and recycled for those that don't / cannot compost).

I use herbs, spices and clays to colour my soaps naturally. Alkanet root is may favourite, when I infuse it in olive oil the oil goes a gorgeous deep red, once the alkaline lye solution is added it reacts and turns a beautiful deep purple which mellows out to a lavender purple as the soap cures.

I have recently added candles into the mix, right now these have been included in gift sets but the hope is to add some of the favourite fragrances as a regular item.

Cosmetics and candles take a lot of research and testing to get to a point when they are ready to be sold, I have other things that I am working on such as skin care but this probably wont be ready to launch until the end of this year... watch this space...
